I know nothing about making a bideo game or heartbound but why don't indie devs like this just "finish" the game to make people happy just adding a simple ending so people can beat the game and get a product they paid for but then also keep working on it for free as it is also your passion project.
Seems like an easy way to keep everyone happy

Can't be that hard just have one ending with some text boxes referencing some choices and if it is a big RPG with diverging paths have like 2 endings. Bigger games have had less interesting endings that threw your choices out the window at least they are finished
