>>714964965There's no defending him. The dude has portrayed himself over and over for years as some sort of wiz kid coder/hacker by citing his "authority" at Blizzard and being a prolific "hacker for the government".
Then once people actually see his coding, it's literally like a complete beginner, and he has been stuck making his game for fucking 9 years and has barely anything to show for it.
>>714964965>uses 0/1 in place of true/false for arguments as they are essentially interchangeableAh, C school of thought. Nothing strictly wrong with it, but I'd still prefer setting a macro or something for true/false to be clearer.
At the end of the day, I'd take most takes on coding with a grain of salt. Like, YandereDev's code is bad from a structural standpoint (very prone to bugs or resistant to changes), but string comparisons aren't what caused the game to run so slow. I haven't peered into Pirate's code, but those points you mention sound rather mundane. I'd be more interested in the structural side of things.
>>714965025Nah, he's definitely not the sadistic type, he's narcissistic and vain, not cruel outside of the cruelty of ignorance. >>714965848I'd need to delve into his code to make a judgement on how it's structured, but I've basically attributed the game's progress to him choosing the streamer life over getting anything substantial done. Like you can tweak existing code to your heart's content, and never get anywhere with implementing the new content you're supposed to be working on. I know I've been guilty of refactoring instead of working on new stuff, every now and then.

Iโm an indie dev as a hobbyist and software engineer for my job. I let me game work be sloppy because genuinely nobody is looking at it but me, and if it works Iโm not going to waste my time building an infinitely scalable, performant, or readable solution. However, Iโm willing to admit itโs not my best code and wouldnโt bother defending it, whatโs Thorโs excuse?
>>714969419Hi Jason, you left out that he should eat your entire ass
>>714965781>>714965925I don't like the guy either, but this seems very nitpicky.
The Game Maker particle system expects certain variables in its function and at all times displays to you what those numbers mean at the bottom of the window if you hover over them. So for example in that screenshot, if you see a 360 or 270 it refers to a angle, and this will be displayed.
Does that even count as a magic number?
>>714964314 (OP)I know nothing about making a bideo game or heartbound but why don't indie devs like this just "finish" the game to make people happy just adding a simple ending so people can beat the game and get a product they paid for but then also keep working on it for free as it is also your passion project.
Seems like an easy way to keep everyone happy
>it's an RPG so it is hardCan't be that hard just have one ending with some text boxes referencing some choices and if it is a big RPG with diverging paths have like 2 endings. Bigger games have had less interesting endings that threw your choices out the window at least they are finished

>>714964562Honestly i'm going to err on the side of PirateSoftware here. Idk what these alarms are, idk how many there are, idk if there is a chance of adding more later than don't need to be set to zero there. There are a lot of unknowns that could make "set alarm[0] to [4] to zero" an ok decision.
Doing a for loop just to replace these 4 lines don't seem to offer that much gain to maintainability, and performances-wise, it's pretty much the same.

Like go look at leaked source engine code or whatever engine you respect, there are in fact areas where you use "magic numbers", namely UI and effects. If something needs to last for 2 seconds or have a 240 degree angle or be 100 pixels tall, you just pass 2 and 240 and 100 to the function. Like what, are you seriously going to suggest he should define DEG_240 = 240 constant because magic number bad? Magic number bad when 17 means "success" and 65 means "completed with warnings" and you pass that stuff all around your function calls.
At least give me 3 screens worth of indentation nested if statement or something to laugh at
>>714969609Purely technically, yes, whatever numbers you feed straight into part_type_etc are magic numbers. The problem here is that GameMaker's toy language does not let you name the arguments like you could in C#, for example. So, you need to either define variables, which has non-zero overhead you can't ignore in any larger project, or macros, which don't and are the closest thing GameMaker has to constants, but are global in scope. And that's just to force a healthy "self-documenting" pattern into a place where virtually all people reading this will have easy access to argument reference anyway, since GameMaker shows you which argument you're hovering over in its code editor, he's really just splitting hairs here.

It's ironic how the guy that claims to be from the industry with years of experience, that supports game development hasn't put out anything useful for game dev.
None of his content is actually useful. You will learn nothing about game dev if you used all of his videos to learn. He provides no knowledge at all.

>>714974297This would be true, if his coding wasn't just copy pasting. Look at his streams where he actually codes, the code he writes is an exact copy as the lines above but with different hardcoded numbers.
Plus, if it ever scales you'll have to write a for loop anyway, there's no point in delaying the inevitable.
Here's gamemaker code that works, all he'd need to do is copy and paste this and it works. I have to wonder, could he explain what the for loop is without looking it up?

>>714974731On second thought, it might have something to do with the review bomb it's getting.
>>714974531Funnily enough PirateSoftware said this exact thing a while back. Almost like he had some self-awareness that he didn't know how to code himself. Hell it's one of his few takes I agree with, one of the big indie game dev traps is thinking that being a good coder is more important because knowing how to make a fun game.
Problem is he also says this while still trying to pretend to be some big coding expert.
>>714970641It's not the loop that's the issue, it's that they have no meaning attached to them, you don't know their purpose, you don't know which ones you can use, which ones you can't, you don't know if you can add a new alarm to the list because you don't know how the list is being managed, and assuming it's a "one alarm per event that requires it" then these are alarm constantly allocated in game memory that will never get used after these events occurred and will never be triggered again.
This is not only technical debt, but also inadvertently obfuscated his code: only him knows what's going on, nobody can just come and contribute without having a deep knowledge of all the intricacies of what's going on, implying he will be the only one working on the game from start to finish.
That's not just the "irrelevant alarm thingy" that suffers this problem but basically everything is written as if only him needs to know what's going on and he has perfect memory and no intention of ever changing and thinking "maybe I shouldn't have done this that way".
>>714974841And by someone that didn't know what they was doing who didn't claim otherwise.
>>714974149>>714974221You can even see most of the top comments from the trailer's upload date are extremely negative or are mocking it. The reception was extremely negative, but it didn't matter as a lot of people watched it "ironically". The largest demographic watching A Minecraft mover were zoomers in their late-teens / early-twenties, many reacting to meme scenes like "chicken jockey" and pretending to freak out.
>>714974653>the code he writes is an exact copyThen he's retarded, but anons will still see this in other code and start screeching.

This code review isn't all that interesting as these old engine scripts are usually so tied to the garbage legacy features of the backward compatible engine you have to accept that garbage and work around it

He's been at public events where he had a similar voice, and it wouldn't have been feasible for him to bring his own mic
I think he just consciously speaks as deeply as possible at all times

>>714980857>constantly spammed with alien shitBut that turned out to be true
>>714970254it is nonsensical. each index can have different values and is for a different event, and there are at least 419. that at least the highes index of that array he showed. it is insanity.
ofc your game takes 8years or longer if you code like that. everytime he has to look up, what is the right index and search it.
you can look up game save files and look for flags, if thats happen, the flag is on, if thats not happened the flag is off, if someone hates you the flag is on, etc. you dont put just random numbers, that also mean smth, into a long ass array.
100 ways to do that more effecient and readable.
normaly you code it, so you know whats happening inside the code, not because of a comment.
Game maker has booleans, and he uses false, true and 1 and 0. sometimes 1 means true, sometimes 0 means false, and sometimes 1 and 0 are just the first 2 options of a series of options.

I don't see why people imagine other programming languages to be that much harder or different than stuff like Game Maker Language. If you know GML, you can learn Python and start writing useful stuff in it pretty easily. The language doesn't really matter, the way you organize your logic is the important part, and that's extremely similar in most languages. The more practice you have, the more similar things look.

in fact many of the things he does using literals are what lead to vulnerabilities where they are not updated. I saw him setup scenarios that could result in race conditions, which is a big attack vector in video games, let alone him creating scenarios where its easier for these to be introduced and harder to track down and resolve.
