At the end of the day, I'd take most takes on coding with a grain of salt. Like, YandereDev's code is bad from a structural standpoint (very prone to bugs or resistant to changes), but string comparisons aren't what caused the game to run so slow. I haven't peered into Pirate's code, but those points you mention sound rather mundane. I'd be more interested in the structural side of things.

The problem here is that GameMaker's toy language does not let you name the arguments like you could in C#, for example. I'm a software engineer (never worked for blizzard though so my opinion is probably irrelevant), and I'm of the opposite opinion actually. I don't see why people imagine other programming languages to be that much harder or different than stuff like Game Maker Language. If you know GML, you can learn Python and start writing useful stuff in it pretty easily. The language doesn't really matter, the way you organize your logic is the important part, and that's extremely similar in most languages. The more practice you have, the more similar things look.
