I actually really like the core VC gameplay, and think it *could* be amazing in a game with more tightly balanced mission design. Not many games play like VC, with its movement and tactical focus trumping raw power, it's a gem in that sense. I'm endlessly frustrated by how the maps are defeated by the game mechanics in the lamest way possible, though. The most recent breaking point for me was in VC4, it was that mission where you do a mock battle in city streets. Just to see if I could get away with it, I scout rushed with Minerva and it finished the mission in like 2 minutes, and it just fucking destroyed the game's image in my mind permanently. Haven't picked it up since.
I think they need to stop with the shared action pool, for one thing. It's crazy to be able to keep moving the same unit over and over again until you run out of actions- almost no tactics game allows this, for good reason. Apparently the VC devs worked on Hundred Line which had a similar system, and that game had THE worst SRPG gameplay I've ever experienced. Genuinely nauseating.
