Keep in mind they chose to do this with a crew of only two 2D artists, and presumably only one 3D artist, none of whom are able to work full time on it, due to "resource constraints". At one point they had a third 2D artist, but as of the last update, which was over a year ago, they're back to only 2, so they definitely blew all the money already.
Also, twice now they've tried justifying the lack of communication by claiming that the project is so close to completion they might as well release it instead of posting updates. The first time they did that was two years ago, in their "final update before full release", and the second time wasn't even in an official update, but in a reply to a guy saying he regretted backing the project. That reply was 5 months ago and there's still no new trailer or anything to drum up interest prior to full release.
