Metroid is such an on the nose counter-example to this situation. Nintendo tried to take this western appealing IP and pivot it towards Japan, with disastrous results. And then they realized that was a really dumb idea and refocused on marketing it to the people who actually like it. The result was the highest sales the franchise has ever seen. Done and done.
