Tsurumaki loves to have dialogue and details that seem important lead nowhere, and offhanded dialogue and inconsequential details that turn out to be massively important several episodes later. Compounding this is that he sets a breakneck pace and will throw in plenty of actual bullshit lines, cameos, allusions, and symbolism to obscure the important stuff. It's one of the reasons I don't like him that much. It worked for FLCL, but doesn't work for anything more realistic or serious.
