I completely missed this joke the first time around. That's a good one. Though I don't imagine Merian actually having had a pet. Would be strange to come up with a pet her and her sister could share. Also recontextualizes Pliny smacking Merian with her hat. Always thought it wasn't intentional but now seeing it again it feels a lot like she did it to shut up Merian.
