I'll consider the day trips. When I was in Japan last year, I stayed as far away from the real touristy regions, for most of my trip I stayed in either a residential region of eastern Tokyo or Fukuoka, alongside a 3 day trip to Iki Island. I didn't see a single foreign besides myself for 85% of the trip, barring one incident in which I encountered a literal pack of Chinamen. See picture.
I'm not opposed to going to Osaka or the other more well trod conventional routes but I really want to live Japan, not treat it like an amusement park. I'll definitely think about the day trips though, since I didn't go on a single one last time.
