Alert is a good trait, you can always tell when an ambush is coming because your party fails 4x perception checks. The situations where you actually get ambushed and only Alert saves you are slim to none.

Although it sounds like you may not be talking about an actual "ambush" meaning your party gets suprised and loses a turn, in that case yeah its gay you always gotta save before talking to anyone cuz they might just all aggro on you after talking to them, but anyone who plays games like these should be quicksaving every fucking chance they get even if they arent planning on savescumming
