the next level, 15, allowed to come back a bit. lost only 40 hp and still have a good chunk of mana.
I also got some nice items for the last few level, scroll of knowledge reveals the map (in addition to revealing items) and potion of mystic mind reveals all enemies to me for a few dozens turns. The stairs are guarded by demonic idols, so I fear it will be getting a bit harder now still.
