Anti-heroes are in my opinion just better characters narratively. Not necessarily the edgy-fag craze anti-heros but the trope in general.
Think of your standard heroic character:
>I want to DO THE RIGHT THING AND HELP PEOPLE
Dude isn't a human, he's a walking virtue signal, he can't have conflicting emotions or be selfless because they only thing he wants is to be heroic in of itself.

Now an anti-hero? He wants things, he's cynical, intelligent and thoughtful, and sees things for what they are. If he does choose to act heroically it's even more admirable because he is doing so in a non-idyllic setting. He is smart enough to understand the merit of more sinister ideologies and if he does behave against the grain he is doing so against prevalent anti-social narrative talking points. If he acts selfless it's even more noteworthy because he is actively being self-sacrificial of his own motives. If he doesn't you can probably sympathize with him. And, if he does start murdering people it was probably for a really good fucking reason. We don't accept Kantian or Utilitarian bullshit here, thx. They're generally just smarter, deeper, better and the depths of their heroism when it happens go further.

I've also noticed there are basically zero anti-heroines.
