Maybe this is just cope but part of me thinks Oda could have kept the gomu gomu no mi as the rubber fruit, keep the awakening the same, and have Joy Boy and Luffy both just embody Nika's role as a god of freedom, same as they do now. Even the cartoony non-rubber stuff can be explained as being something like Bonney's age fruit giving her imagination powers too.
