Jim Henson created the Muppets in 1955 for a Washington DC local TV show called Sam and Friends that was so popular he started doing a ton of commercials and talk show appearances with them. PBS and Sesame Street approached him because they figured his style of commercials would translate well into sketch comedy teaching kids about letters and numbers. Jim was hesitant about it because he had always been trying to push puppetry into a direction that could appeal to adults, but believed in the idea enough to go with it.
The recurring bits on Season 1 of SNL with the horny alien monster Muppets were basically him trying to get that adult puppetry groove back before the Muppet Show was greenlit by the British.
