I mean, there hasn't been a Muppets movie in eleven years. Admittedly the last one didn't do great but that's probably why we haven't seen them since.
Muppets is just one of those franchises that got big in the 20th century and now has seemingly permanent inertia though. They're probably never going to "go away" in the same way that the Looney Tunes and Superman are just gonna be here forever because they're understood to be popular, no matter what the "ground level" hype for them actually is.

I was watching re-runs of the original series in the 90s as a little boy, and that shit absolutely blew my mind. It was an absolute feast for the senses. High art disguised as a children's show. I think people forget how cool it was to see a variety show with those kind of sensibilities back then. Some of the greatest television of all time imo. Should be mandatory viewing for all young children.

It was good, but its also pretty blatant "This is how I would help save the Muppets" self-insert fanfiction to the point that one of the earlier script drafts ended on Kermit declaring a Muppet Show reboot would be coming soon to ABC.
I really wish we had gotten that revival of "The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever" they had originally announced before then. Was an unfinished Jim Henson idea about Gonzo directing a big budget disaster movie but blowing most of the money on the opening credits sequence resulting in the production values getting shittier and shittier as it goes on.

Jim Henson created the Muppets in 1955 for a Washington DC local TV show called Sam and Friends that was so popular he started doing a ton of commercials and talk show appearances with them. PBS and Sesame Street approached him because they figured his style of commercials would translate well into sketch comedy teaching kids about letters and numbers. Over half a century of popularity, numerous beloved TV shows and success theatrical releases.
