Smash Bros has one guaranteed effect upon a roster inclusion, it creates more porn
That's about it
There are some certain benefits i.e. people have cited it as a gateway entry to getting into less known Nintendo series' like Metroid, Earthbound, F-Zero, Star Fox, Xenoblade, etc but those are within the minority of people
The vast majority can become fans of the characters within the roster
Smash Bros doesn't magically make something a gorillion times more popular, if anything most of the time it just gives a skewed perspective of the character onto people divorced from the context of their actual games'
F-Zero 99 did more to make people actual F-Zero fans (and not JUST Captain Falcon fans) than Smash Bros has ever done in its whole lifetime
Now let me make this clear, this only happens WITH roster inclusions
I love Assist Trophies but people don't care who gets added, it's only when the character has a sizable fanbase clamoring for their roster debut that's when people make Assist Trophies a bad thing
Starfy's been an assist as long as Waluigi and nobody makes jokes about him
It's not mockery, it's just apathy (also his series is on hiatus/dead right now so yeah)
It boils down the backlash of hype people get and how this fanbase is full of people who are needlessly competitive over something they have no sway into
The Smash fanbase has thousands people all with their own desires and the roster space in Smash isn't infinite (and it's practically guaranteed we're never getting something like Ultimate again)
People get older, they get tired, and/or become impatient
So when the "competition" gets taken down the peg it gives the illusion that their most wanted is suddenly more likely
