Despite what some people may tell you, humans generally tend to build square houses because it is a convenient and familiar shape. That's not to say other shapes don't exist but there's nothing wrong with squares. I also feel that the use of wood floors and painted furniture (such as the storage room shelves) give a comfortable look to the place. Also 3-wide corridors for pawns to move around in and alternating, non-monotonous floor patterns.
>how do you defend it?
With some luck, some savescumming, decent equipment, a handful of traps, use of good cover (defensive barricade visible on the west of the screenshot) and items. I like microing the combat a bit too. It's important to neutralize the biggest threats, either by focusing fire or engaging them with melee units. This whole defense setup is admittedly still weak; I'm lacking power and components for turrets, as well as better weapons.
