And by the same logic of not being the protagonist you can get infected instantly to a rat bite or mauled to death by zombie dogs the moment you step outside or get gut shot by some other random survivor. You're assuming you have a protagonist's survivability but not his plot limitations in the face of something which we know for a fact had a 99%+ lethality rate.
