Obviously there were storytelling artworks in Japan and Korea, and probably many examples of proto-manga/manhwa too, but the format of modern manga is based on American comics. Rip-off wasn't the best word, it's more inspired by, but I'm just saying that Japanese are known to often take things from other cultures and adapt it to fit their tastes, and in the process something uniquely Japanese is made. I'd just like to see Korean's take on comics/manga to be more uniquely their own than what I've seen.
