For any of you who aren't familiar, here's what the test was:
>giftapults only send out to players online in the game (who make up the player count) so you can use them to sample the players
>send out 1402 giftapults (2% of the 70,000 players at the time)
>find the profiles gifts went to in inventory history, 996 want to bots and 406 went to humans
>the same ratio of players to bots a previous method suggests looking at the steam API on active players
>searching for similar unique naming schemes of the bots finds 60,000 bot profiles
In short, ~70% of the players valve says are in-game are bots idling for items, at least last year
