It's still one of if not the best multiplayer shooter on the market. Nothing else plays like it, its pretenders cut the team sizes in half for the sake of forced esports, there's little to no meaningful metaprogression. Its closest contemporary equivalent would be probably fucking Splatoon but again that's 4v4. Nowhere close to the "grab em by the nuts and clobber em in the face" pace of skirmishing that TF2's combat system with its max ammo limits and actually punishing people for dying lends itself towards.

It's true! Splatoon is the freshest FPS to come out since TF2. Tower Control is an especially ingenious game mode that manages to blend together payload and control points very creatively.

the game is good if you play community servers, Casual is fine but mired in the annoyances that come with matchmaking.
TF2 would honestly be perfect if valve did one more balance touch up to make the more viable weapon designs competitive (no we're not gonna rework the sun on a stick into being good no one gives a shit and its a bad design to begin with)

the whole point i was trying to make is that the sandman+cleaver is too powerful for what it is. Scout's whole thing is that he's weak at range and has to use his better movement to close the distance todo large damage.
The combo invalidates that need because you can send two of the fastest projectiles down range and kill 6/9 classes in just those two shots. Yes it requires skill but a competent player can master that and invalidate one of scout's major design downsides. Moreover, the stuns would disarm the enemy player and in the case of moonshots completely take away control from them. That shit was annoying man.
Everything else you listed other than maybe bonk and mad milk either requires you get into close range where scout already excels to do competent or more damage compared to the combo. The alternative with the Crit-o-cola or the candy cane is that scout is even more vulnerable than compared to the -15 health the sandman gave.

Valve handled that worry in a smart and effective way by adding the option to wipe materials/temp on game shutdown. Is 4chan correct in saying that community servers were deleted and matchmaking is all that’s left? A ton of people have forgotten about the server browser feature and say the game is unplayable. Why hasn’t there been more a reaction against Valve deleting the server browser?

Most community servers are gone. The only ones left that have a population (and arent super gimmicky servers) are the most popular ones which tend to be fucking cancerous and filled with sensitive morons who will ban you for taunting at them in game. Matchmaking is "unplayable" because it is completely unintuitive for prolonged games and most of the times you are in completely dogshit lobbies where you either stomp the enemy team completely or get stomped.

TF2 was made on the tailend of a completely diffren era of online multiplayer shooters. Back when user ran servers and strong user creation tools were the norm.
The base diesng of that game was strong and people were given the tools to further tweek the experance to their liking.
People didn't argue about comp vs. casual, crits or no crits, or whatever other shit people moan about these days because everyone was given the tools to create their own space and play with like-minded individuals.
This is why the Meet Your Match update was so bad for the game, because now there is a "cannon" way to play and were ever or not you like X setting or Y match tone is a contentious issue that you have to convince the developers of. And hte servers you used to play on? Tucked away in sub menus, slowly dying off as little timmy has no idea they even exist and is instead setting matched into a one sided stomp against a 6 stack of discord groomers.

You and I both know the vast majority of those servers are empty, botted, running out of a foreign region with horrible latency, are gimmick servers, or filled with custom content. You can't play vanilla TF2 in a community server without either settling with a 10-12 person server or subjecting yourself to fucking Uncletopia and Skial.

Otherwise no, because Valve hates it's own games and fans, they ruined TF2 and I can never go back to it. It's a shadow of it's former self. Same thing with Dota 2.

tf2's base is genuinely so far beyond any of it's competition that it still manages to hold up well despite being at a fraction of its former glory. tf2 is literally less than half as good as it was during its golden age, and yet it STILL the best of its class. There is a reason why it is still played, and by people who probably never even knew it at its peak no less.
I don't play it much these days, once or twice a year I'll feel the urge to play some, but every time I do I am still pleasantly surprised, somewhat mournful, perhaps, that it doesn't quite hold up to the days when community servers were the default, and you could find multiple servers for every niche desire, and it wasn't overrun with third-worlders, but overall, still pleasantly surprised. The game just feels so good to play, its movement, its controls, its fundamental game design are all just as close as you can reasonably get to perfect. Outside of some questionable balance patches, and the fact that the game literally just runs worse than it used to, the game truly does stand the test of time. In comparison every time I try some other modern fps I end up fucking miserable by the end of the play session, wondering how the genre has fallen so fucking hard.
