All of this stuff happens before Peter has ever even met Mary Jane, by the way (though there is a running joke that begins in ASM # 15 of Aunt May trying to set Peter up with her but he's always busy and misses her because he's too caught up with Liz & Betty and Spider-Man business, and a joke in ASM # 25 where Liz and Betty meet her off-panel and are intimidated by her looks) Pete and Liz begin getting teased as early as ASM # 4 and this is followed up on in nearly every single issue from then on (as I demonstrate in pic related.)

Also, the panel from the OP is out of context and from ASM # 5 where Peter is hanging out with Flash, Liz, and the others at a bowling alley as friends and he decides to start talking crap about Spider-Man to devert suspicion away from himself which causes Flash to say what he says in the OP and begins the running joke of Flash butting heads with Peter but adoring Spider-Man much to Pete's amusement and chagrin.

Flash and Liz even go to see Aunt May when she's sick in the hospital in ASM # 10 without even telling Peter or planning on running into him there because they're just good friends and good people.
