I did this with my first AR15. I even took a little swim in the pool with it then left it outside overnight to dry before I shot it the first time.
It passed the test but I eventually decided it's not a good break-in procedure. I don't want any leftover manufacturing debris or shitty lube causing galling or uneven wear issues on the moving surfaces during the initial break-in that have a potential to reduce reliability down the road.
Now I meticulously clean and lube for the first 500-1000, THEN start neglecting all maintenance until I get stoppages or it gets too gross for me to tolerate.
