Vietnam has a larger population than Thailand and the same GDP as Philippines, which it is overtaking on growth, and is closing fast on Thailand. It is on a chinese/Taiwanese trajectory, unsurprisingly.
Before the French showed up, Vietnam and Thailand were in the long process of dividing the entire nutsack landmass between themselves and eliminating Cambodia and laos. Vietnam conquered and nearly took Cambodia permanently in the 1970-1980s before getting pressured out.
Indonesia blows everyone out of the water though.
