NTA but World was a downgrade to SMB 3. SM64 was ambitious but played very clunky. The entire gamecube era felt like Nintendo was throwing shit on the wall in hopes it sticks(Luigi getting his own solo horror game, a very edgy soccer game where the entire cast acted OOC, golf + tennis games that was filled with human OCs, Wario Land being abandoned for a bizzare sub-par 3D beat-them-up that featured Wario as the protagonist, four mediocre Mario Party games that are seen inferior to the N64 Mario Party trilogy, DK musical spin-offs when people wanted DKC 4, and a DDR clone that nobody asked for). The Wii era was a improvement at first but immediately got stale due to Nintendo trying to be safe as possible. The Wii U era was pretty much the same.
The only reason why the Mario franchise didn't attacked by journalists or a vocal minority was because it's a Nintendo franchise, hence "Nintendo could do no wrong". The Sonic franchise isn't a Nintendo IP, so people were more willing to shit on it for the lols or because it's not like their childhood games anymore.
