I remembered IDW #79 came out and read it. As usual, it was pretty meh. But if I had to give it any one thing, it's that Whisper didn't hesitate and wasn't given any opportunity to hesitate. Silver literally holds Tangle back to prevent her from trying to talk Whisper down, and by all accounts she was going to blow the stupid squid's head off and be done with it - her first instinct is even to cheer to her dead squadmates that she finally avenged them by murdering their killer. Mimic suicide-bombing to try and take her down with him, in this context, comes across less as a writer cop-out to prevent the hero from having blood on their hands and more like the last ditch option of someone with no other cards to play. This is the only moment since her debut that she didn't feel too much like Crying Lesbian, and I appreciate that.

Of course, like all things IDW, it still flubs its own setpieces by having Tangle's "we aren't going to KILL Mimic, we're going to STOP Mimic!" thing amount to nothing with no reaction (though maybe it's for the best considering there's enough soap drama), the battle itself made Silver look a little weak, and the attempt to use wisps as a makeshift pride flag like they haven't learned their lesson from Sega slapping them from the dyke flag incident during issue #61.

In my opinion? Tangle. People only liked her at the time of debut because they think she "fits in" visually or wanted Sonic to fuck her, but she never really felt like it in either case.

I think that's just a framing thing and people being bad at reading stuff. Both versions are aligned in Kit being a controlling little shit who tries to keep her stuck with him. Ian gets stuck on the "opposite versions!" thing where I think Evan is going for "they're both extremely childish." Surge wants to look tough but constantly allows herself to be used and keeps acting like she has no agency on her life when she absolutely does, even has meltdowns about it. Kit is constantly overthinking everything and creating grudges and acts like a bitch whenever things aren't exactly how he wants them. These are both really common behavioral patterns for maladjusted girls and boys.

I just think they need to have a story within the next few appearances that makes it clear that for all the scheming he does, Kit only has "control" over Surge because she doesn't want agency in her life. He's not as smart as he thinks he is. It only works because she doesn't try. That would help people understand she's not innocent.

I think everything about how Whisper and Tangle have been handled is shit, but Lanolin serves a really good purpose in having a character who is completely mentally at odds with the other characters. It's good for both helping kids understand that overcoming differences isn't easy and to facilitate some intercharacter drama without going full soap opera.

The problem is they've handled her horribly in the actual books. You need to read Adam's comics to get what they're angling at. The subplot is just utterly flubbed.

Okay, so. Let's talk, for a moment, about the demonstrable fact that Ian Flynn is not a world-builder. He is a plot-constructor, and these two things are not, in fact, the same.

Now, the popular narrative among his defenders is that he is the great architect of the modern Sonic lore. But this is patently, provably false. Let's look at the facts. The fact of the matter is, Ian Flynn is fundamentally uninterested in any world-building that doesn't serve as a setup for some grandiose, future-altering reveal. He has no time for texture, only for plot mechanics.

Let's take a very simple example. The stone heads. You know the ones. The ones with the vaguely human faces that shoot arrows at you. We see them on Angel Island. We also see them in Sylvania Castle. Now, a writer who is actually interested in *building a world* would see this repetition across two geographically and historically distinct locations and his intellectual curiosity would be piqued. Who built these? Why are they here? Is there a common ancient civilization that predates both the Echidnas and whatever kingdom Sylvania belonged to? This is basic, foundational world-building. It's a question begging to be answered.

But Flynn will never, ever answer this. And let's be intellectually honest about why. It's not because of some arcane SEGA mandate. It's because the answer, whatever it might be, is irrelevant to his "Grand purpose." Answering it doesn't introduce a new villain for a four-issue arc. It doesn't give Surge a new trauma to angst over. It doesn't lead to a shocking character betrayal. Therefore, in the mind of a writer like Flynn, it is pointless. It is flavor, and he is only interested in the main course of his pre-planned, by-the-numbers narrative.

The best use of world-building would be to make it clear that the world is much bigger than the main cast, and to set up circumstances for the main cast to deal with.
World-building doesn't work in Sonic, though. Cause if we go into some history or backstory, windfags will screech "WTF, WHERE IS SONIC?!!". Sonic's Gary Stu nature makes it so he is not part of the world, he IS the world. As in, any and all important events happen because of him, but no events affect him directly. No one can be as powerful or more powerful than him, have as much or more impact in the world as him, or be as famous or more famous than him.
