This franchise is so painfully uncreative, goddamn. Do they really see Eggman and the Kukkus as nothing more than the same brand of "Evil army villains" that can't possibly have different goals, themes, aesthetics, tactics, and character-related messages?

Based and cringe. Sonic can still inspire others while being relatable and an underdog himself.
Sonic's biggest problem (And what caused the downfall of the games after SA1) is that there is no plan on what to do after the underdog Tails gets through his development. Does he just eternally stay undeveloped and dependent on Sonic's advice? Or do they just keep adding new underdogs for Sonic to help? Sega's answer was "Both" and no Sonic story has ever been as good as SA1 because of it. Sonic should develop along with everyone else; that's the natural conclusion of his character.
