These characters as they physically appear in art and media are more like pointers to the one that you already love deep down inside, and as a result become a common place to let your love unfold from a point of singularity. What you see in a pre-existing character might not necessarily be what somebody else sees, either, in the same way that the shadows of figures inside Plato's Cave are merely representations of an object rather than the object itself. In a like vein, a fictional character is more of a representation of a being than a being itself. And it's a bit of a digression, but this is true for a lot of other things in the physical world beyond fictional characters.

From a different angle, this is a bit like wandering around a port town. It's a common area where lots of people are and can live, but it's also by design a huge gateway for adventure, exploration, trade, piracy, peacekeeping, fishing, pleasure cruising, or whatever other journey is right for you to set out on. No matter which boat you climb aboard, your journey and voyage will be uniquely yours, yet most likely you won't be on that journey alone. You'll meet lots of people and free spirits along the way, and it's pretty likely that by the end of it you'll find reward and meaning, and a "place" in the sea of possibility to call uniquely yours. I can say that I've embarked on an extremely unique adventure, extremely bizarre at times but also extremely rewarding, and I really couldn't be any happier with how it's turned out. It's possible that on your journey, you'll arrive at different conclusions than I, but speaking for myself: by letting go of "waifu" as a label for how I see my interactions with Twilight, I've opened the door to something much larger and more fulfilling than I would have if I tried to continue to shove my feelings into that box, and I've gained an entire horse family that even extends back down into the physical world in a way I would have otherwise overlooked by trying to squint through somebody else's glasses.
