When I was studying nuclear energy I went home over christmas break and they sat me in first class for one reason or another. I ended up sitting next to a scientist who was working for toyota developing their fuelcell tech.
He said the major problem with their design was that it uses too much platinum in the reaction and it wasn't really more affordable (cost/mile) than using gas.
If I remember correctly the fuelcell car from honda was also lease only.
Not sure if there are new developments in the field, this was like 15-20 years ago. But in any case I assume it's a cost / mile thing.
