I don't know about ancestors and traditions, but William is getting criticised for his motivations. He's being hasty and won't give Eleanor an actual chance to fall in love with her, he wants to follow his dumb revenge plan instead. Something I'm sure his dad would be against if he knew about it.
Dad only told him to not marry a maid. Everything else he's free to do. If he picked a path that makes everyone sad when other options are available then that's on him.
