DC going for le gritty realism after the Nolan era was a mistake.
Marvel managed to deliver a version of Captain America who was cool and stoic and could fight waves of goons by himself and lift Thor's Hammer. But they didn't sacrifice his friendly nature or optimism, even when the aesthetic became darker. I would dare say that Chris Evans Cap was like Christopher Reeve Superman for a generation. DC missed out on that with Henry Cavill being so divisive, and are desperately trying to course correct.
