You can definitely see the difference between using worn to shit mags and factory new ones. HK was using their steel mags instead of aluminum too.
Another underappreciated issue is that during the shooting phase the extractor can jump over the groove and the shorter dwell time on a shorter gas system leads to bolt movement while the extractor isn't properly gripping the rim. So the o-ring that adds extractor tension was a Crane solution to this problem.
