I don't think it's a question of can games be good at storytelling, it's just that nobody cares. The most popular games are all soulslikes, friendslop Lethal Company glorified Roblox games, sports and simulators. They've all got one thing in common: jack shit for cinematics and dialogue trees. But nobody wants every game to look like Toribash either, put that effort somewhere.
