the halloween episode was an homage to fooly cooly, and the one with ultra peepee referenced eva (not an anime reference, but at the end of the germaphobe episode where zim stands in front of his classmates covered in meat, the classmates reactions was a sly reference to the ending of happiness (1999) where the kid announces to his family that he came for the first time)
director steve ressel was also a huge weeb and got busted for talking to JKs on anime forums a few years ago, and since then he's gone awol lol
