Dess/the knight has Kris's original soul to keep her "alive" ala flowey with determination, kris willingly departed with it cause he feels responsible for whatever happened to her, and is in the plot for 2 fold reasons of saving dess and getting his soul back but kris doesn't really care all that much if he has to give his life to save dess if necessary cause he values himself very very little, and partially believes everyone would be better off if he were dead/gone.
