I loved the Jak sequels
It got dark, but the way they handled it in terms of narrative, art design, gameplay and tone was so consistent that the tonal shift was fantastic.
It added to the original instead of being something completely different.

Anybody who doesn't like the sequels and solely praises the original, methodically jerks off to Banjoo and Kazooie.
