even without the absurd crit damage spears would still be more usable as weapons than axes because of the sharpness mechanic
spears don't require you to disengage combat and go micromanage sharpening (or else suffer as awful a damage reduction as if you were exhausted), they have the good sense to break so you can double click another and keep on trucking
stone axe lumberjack remains good but it's just a worse alternative to spears as you discovered, it's deeply funny to me that the big medieval specialist update where you were supposed to build improvised armor and crossbows and forge/smith steel suits and maces has a meta of

I wonder if they're saving the balancing until content lock to make it marginally easier or if they're actually going to launch into MP and have everyone running around emulating wipe day Rust indefinitely, totally bypassing/ignoring the vast majority of things they added other than going "oh cool keychain"
