DS is flawed by virtue of adding content or changing things for the sake of it.
Yoshi is an alright change of pace, but Luigi is just Better Mario for everything except the wall kick/balloon/wing cap stars, and Wario is Worse Mario unless you need to break black bricks or use the metal cap. It's simply not fun to have to go switch characters/grab a cap for things Mario could just do in the original. Likewise I'm struggling to think of new stars (the ones that were added to the courses) that were interesting.
I did like the new courses (Block Fort, the Island, the character stages) or when they expanded out the existing courses (like the area around Whomp's Fortress though I'm struggling to think of other examples at the moment).
Overall though I just don't think the juice justifies all the extra squeeze. If you have to play one, play the original, but maybe play DS if you're looking to switch things up.
