Back in the day having menus was actually novel enough that it was listed as a special feature on the first few years of DVDs and they included a lot of various extras. Now they're purely functional.
The Harry Potter DVDs had a bunch of minigames for kids and everything.

I actually remember those, they put a LOT of effort into DVD menus and extras back then. They were a selling point for the early DVD years when VHS was still very much around.
