It, like most imported anime in the 1990s, had incredible animation and at least attempted to be about something "mature", which was earth shattering during an era where kids media was dominated by Nickelodeonshit. It was fine for the time, but yeah the writing itself is incredibly cringe and borderline incoherent at times.
