why can't you just carve a Michelangelo out of marble right now? because you don't actually know *how* to direct your will through your hands to shape the marble. that is why the hermetics still need their rituals and why they are so precise! because think about it, you *do* have the ability to make it Michelangelo if you followed some very exact instructions to the letter and had the discipline not to rush or disregard them. this is why they call it Arete, excellence, because it shows how much you still rely on those instructions.

a sorceror is a slave to the instructions, a sleeper doesn't even have access to them, at low arete you can maybe make the arm or the leg without instructions, and at high arete you don't even need instructions anymore
