It's mainly ambience or feel. Bedrooms are small and a little claustrophobic unless it's a mansion. An open plan means every "room" you're in is huge.
What makes it viable is everyone lives alone, which is kind of sad. If there are two adults and three kids there's no privacy and no peace and quiet for anyone.
