>How shit is the average enlisted man's life if they want to become Russian?
The grass looks greener on the other side. It's easy to find a beautiful picture of a place. Not even propaganda, just random pictures that someone took and posted online. It's easy to think, "maybe that place is better than where I am right now." But you can't smell the dust in the wind through the screen, or the lingering smoke stinging your eyes. You can't feel the pebble in the heel of your shoe or the stick of sweat on your brow through the pixels. You can't hear the cawing ravens picking at stinking roadkill out the corner of your eye, you don't see the idiot drivers screeching and swerving down the road, you don't feel the mundanity of the same hill you pass by on your way to and from work. You just look at the picture for a moment and think "I wish I could go there." It's easy to doll up Russia, or the US, or Japan, or anywhere else into being somewhere somebody wants to go, especially if you're looking down a future that has no light at the end of the tunnel.
I wish I could've visited Europe when I was less of a cynical bastard.
