See, that's where I don't agree. People like Mark Fell and Alva Noto have constantly gave me the idea that they are making an intellectual exercise or a proof of concept. It is not casual that Fell spends the largest part of his time writing books and having lectures rather than making music.

I guess the answer to the question "why is no one on their level" is this. They make music and their research is purely functional to their music. Autechre have a distint sound and style in all of their iterations (and Chiastic slide, for example, sounds nothing like Oversteps). Even if they always have this fucking attitude of "no mate we are just two extremely intelligen blokes but we are not composers" (actually, only Sean has this attitude) they have a deep understanding of the state of contemporary classical electronic music and it shows.

Aphex is a master of his craft, but I am sure that in 30 years time AE are the ones that will be rememberd more.
