It's not really about tearing people down. There's a certain kind of person who needs to constantly fish for compliments they really don't otherwise deserve. And it's toxic for everyone involved. It's like when someone asks you if they're ugly. It's not a real question, it's narcissism masquerading as self-deprecation. They can't stand that you're better than them at their special thing, so they guilt you into giving compliments as to bandaid their delusional self-image. Giving in just makes you an enabler of that behavior. It's better to just tell them to fuck off and be done with it.

Also, implying that things being hard makes you want to quit makes me hate you on a purely personal level.
