What a distinctly Protestant mindset. Traditionally, Roman Catholics view that only certain vocations (monks, nuns, etc) elicit getting closer to God. It has always been the Protestant position that laymen glorify God through their crafts, hence the "Protestant Work Ethic" as it's known.

In any case, the decision to produce more simple churches is an intentional aspect of Protestantism. It reinforces the correct doctrine of the invisible church, or in other words, the idea that the one true holy universal apostolic catholic church is in fact the congregation of all saints/believers. The building itself, while built to glorify God, is ultimately just that: a building. What really matters is the congregation.
