It's not a matter of bravery, it's just a lot of effort to think up a truly alien society with alien customs outside of human notions of propriety or morality only for the reward to be less readership because it's impossible for the reader to empathize with it. You'll generally only see glimpses of this when the aliens are more of a concept and their weirdness is either a one-off curiosity or something that is to be digested in human terms. This shouldn't be shocking to you, but humans generally write things for other humans.
