I never said that, I asked for genuinely alien aliens who are characters and not plot devices. You can't name truly alien aliens who are actual characters and not a plot device. I can name actually alien aliens who ARE a plot device, such as the heptapods from Arrival, or the Xeelee from Xeelee sequence. People can write the actually alien. But not as characters. Aliens who are characters, are exotic humans.

Case in point, Revelation Space has weird and fucked up humans who have gene-modded and surgically fucked themselves into being weird and isolated from all other types of humans. Calling something an elf or a dwarf or a glorpsnaxx doesn't make your character better. Good writing is good writing regardless of superficialities, that is to say appearances do not fucking matter. You're taking this seriously(?) and I like that so yeah I'll explain. Scale isn't novelty because it is a thematic effect. What is being done is either evoking "look upon our greatness" or "look upon our greatness (so small still in this grand universe)" which is the same as what could be achieved in earlier history with just a small patch of desert (the entire world to them). This is structural to the stories that use it, like in 40K where gigantic numbers are essential to drive home how meaningless and worthless human lives are in a hostile galaxy. It is a way to emphasize the point that could be made on Earth alone, or a single city alone perhaps.

I don't have a problem with aliens, I have a problem with people treating character design as narratively significant, acting as if it makes stories/games better or worse. All it does it display the creator's aesthetic sense.

To be fair, I possess some kind of mental illness that causes deepseated hatred of romance and sexual intimacy, so I cannot fairly judge any story involving that, my eyes will glaze over paragraphs and I will forget everything involving that after I've read it. All I saw it for was a generic story of cultural replacement, which could be good, but it was not so in Hyperion. I've read so many stories involving the idea of traveling through space at super-lightspeed such that you're younger by the time you've returned that I can't find that component interesting either. If I reached for fan-fiction there was a Diebuster x Star Trek one I read once where Nono's "protect humanity" programming made her act monstrously against the various aliens. Obviously Star Trek has a stance of "we can all understand each other" and Diebuster has a stance of "the enemy MUST be destroyed at all costs" so there was a really interesting exploration of tolerance vs intolerance, especially as Nono did make exceptions for some aliens totally arbitrarily (she knew them personally so they are fine (for now)).

Most space sci-fi isn't doing stuff like this, which is weird because again this was fucking fanfiction about star trek and anime.

I've written for VNs before and a significant amount of time is spent hemming and hawing about what variant of "Okay" the character should respond with, and just getting an AI to shit something out to get past the indecisiveness would probably double my productivity.
One issue is that because AIs are just the conglomerate of human information, it's much less effective at 'writing' aliens compared to humans. I've done extensive sessions with AI chatbots and wrangling them to get things right is more trouble than it's worth. Might as well just write it myself at that point.

I disagree. I love the idea of sci-fi settings where Humans aren't the main focus and are actually super rare.
Its not /v/, and its not really all that good, but Monkey Wrench by Zeurel is the best example of this. Something about the idea of Humans being this race of hunted survivors existing in secrecy on the fringes of the galaxy because of the mistakes of the past is fucking awesome. Also Titan A.E. Humans being the scum of the galaxy that persist through spite and stubborn will is way more interesting than us just being the HFY federation newcomers that Humans are always depicted as in sci-fi media.

In a 2D game there are no excuses, but in a 3D game, expecting the devs to animate full movement for a bunch of different species is unreasonable, even if it would be cool.

There's an old dev diary from Mass Effect 1 that immediately comes to mind every time this problem comes up.
Creating unique animation rigs for every species would've been too time consuming, so the artists were limited to designs that could fit a generic humanoid animation rig for any alien that was going to be a squad member/npc combatant.
They basically had two options for differentiating aliens within that limited rig: giving them crooked dog legs (Quarians/Turians) or adding stuff to their back (Krogan), neither of which required tweaking the base animation rig much.
The game had more weird designs like Hanar or Elcor but they didn't walk around or have any combat animations.
