I know the bed was shit back in SB with Fran and Ivalice appearing, but I firmly believe none of this ever would have happened if they just committed to one complete OC race of rabbit people who aren't called viera and don't have their isolationist culture (two things reserved for their First counterparts) like how Hroths aren't wholesale Ronso. No hand wringing about breaking series tradition and 1:1 lore by being the first game to ever feature male viera means no need to grab a predominantly male race to make up for it means no drama from waiting 2 expacs for the missing genders.
Not that we needed another tribal kemonomimi race with a female-skewed gender ratio when miqo'te exist either, but I also don't think undivided dev attention could have saved playable Hrothgar (who might have fared better as purposemade Bozjan NPCs a la Othardian Lupin) nor do I know what they could've done instead. Maybe the winning move was not to make another race at all.
