“The Dragon 1D was a field refit kit sourced primarily from Achernar BattleMechs and was well in line with the FedSun doctrine of simple but sturdy battlemech design. The 1D stripped out the LRM 10, and used the tonnage to upgrade the autocannon to a Federated Autocannon AC/10 fed with two tons of ammunition. The remaining tonnage was employed to house an extra heatsink and increase the armor to 12 tons, giving it near total protection. While the mech was light on weapons, what weapons it did have were quite powerful, and its well armored frame meant that it could take serious punishment, ensuring that those Dragons in Davion service remained so for long periods of time…
“...The 1S was a more extensive refit kit from Coventry Metal Works, which sought to increase firepower as well as to be appealing to the merc market as well as regular troops. The troublesome missile launcher was replaced with the Lyrans’s own chest mounted missile system, the Shannon Six Shooter SRM-6 found in the Commando. The AC/5 was exchanged for a non muntion depended system in the Thunderbolt A5M Large Laser. In addition to a second Medium Laser in the left arm, the 1S had 6 extra heat sinks to better handle the heat load. In addition to being rolled out to regular units, this variant was commonly seen among Lyran mercenaries as an alternate form of payment. However, it had a somewhat negative reputation, as less scrupulous Lyran commanders would give the mercs the mech, but not the refit kit, which the mercenaries would have to buy themselves. While rare, it caused enough of a stir in the merc community to cause the phrase “get the right Dragon” to become commonplace as a term for ensuring proper forms payment.”
