There's a difference between possum and hideous monster. The joke wouldn't work if he was a hideous overexaggerated analog horror monster. Plus in general I'm sick of that shit where everything evil and dangerous has to look like a single frame jump scare.
I do think that they'd look weird and offputting to most humans who see them 'realistically'. But more along the lines of 'harrowing alien encounter' than 'hyper realistic blood eye creepypasta'.
